The process to construct a secondary suite within a new or existing home could soon become easier.

Kelowna City Council has approved a change to the Official Community Plan which will no longer require the homeowner to apply for a development permit.

The Advisory Planning Committee has already supported the OCP amendment.

The amendment must now go to public hearing before it can be ratified.

Staff indicated the current building permit process already addresses the function of the suite to ensure the safety and B.C. Code compliance of the home to the building bylaw and other requirements.

The amendment means less work for the planning department on secondary suite applications.

Staff was not aware if fees will be lowered as a result of the change, however, City Clerk Stephen Fleming informed council the entire development application fee bylaw is being or will be reviewed.

Councilor Barrie Clark voted against the amendment.
